DRAFT: to be approved GRAND TENNIS CLUB The meeting was called to order by President Walt Volland at 6:32 pm. Quorum confirmed. Board members present were Walt Volland, Pres.; Mike Garvey, VP; Jeff Lewis, Treas.; Diane Hammann, Sec.; Jim Bush, Men’s Rep; Linda Richman, Women’s Rep; and Gerry Smith, Past Pres. Motion made by Gary Browning, seconded by Bob Richman, to approve the minutes of the January 10, 2013 General Meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Reports: Treasurer Jeff Lewis reported $7,836 in checking; $10,002 in savings. The not-to-exceed expenditure of $1,700 voted on at the January General Meeting for windscreens to be installed at the Cimarron Courts is expected to occur in May. GTC-logo shirts will not be ordered until 4 more people place their orders. Any member needing a nametag must contact Jeff and not go directly to the engraver. Women’s Rep Linda Richman reported 29 women participated in the March 6 Crazy Hat Day Mixer and continental breakfast. Over 68 women attended the April 10 luncheon which featured local arts and craft vendors and the Valley Harmony Group entertainers. Money collected from a raffle paid for the band. At the luncheon, Linda reviewed the Club’s guest waiver form. A committee of six was established to discuss movement from one level of play to the next. Men’s Rep Jim Bush reported, “All is well in men’s drop-in land.” Leagues: Rick Jaeger, Men’s 3.0 captain reported the team finished 3rd. He encouraged another member lead a second SCG 3.0 team for 2014. Rick Merring reported the Men’s 3.5 team finished 2nd. For Captain Judy Davi, Linda Richman reported the Ladies’ 4.0 team completed the season in 5th place. Judy Palzer, one of the 3.0 Captains reported the team came in 3rd. Susan Farnell reported the 3.5 West Valley team finished 4th. Walt thanked the captains for their hard work. Social Committee: Pat McCormick reported GTC’s Ice Cream Social contributed $825 to Relay for Life. All costs were covered, so no expense to the Club. The Farewell Tennis/Potluck/Karaoke Party will be on 4/28. Old Business: Key card access control at Cimarron is installed; not yet controlling access. CAM happy with system. Playmate Smash ball machine’s remote control had experienced interference with the cell phone tower; it has been fixed. Because of delamination of a drive wheel, the new machine made noises when used at 50%+ power; the wheel has been replaced. To use the new ball machine, users must first be trained on its operation, then Court 1, 2 or Stadium at Chaparral must be reserved, then keys signed out at the Adobe desk to retrieve (and return) the machines from the courthouse storage room. The lock code for the old ball machine and ball sweeper at Cimarron had been provided to members via an eblast. All are reminded to spin the lock combination when finished using the machines to keep them secure. Cimarron windscreen proposal did not get addressed at the most recent Finance Advisory Committee. After SCG’s insurance provider performed a risk assessment, the Club’s proposed donation of court benches for players’ respite at Chaparral courts was not approved. New Business: The Grand Slam and GTC website are seeking volunteers to write/contribute articles. Sharon Blatnik, CAM’s Director of Communications, has said any subject/any length will be considered for publication in the Grand Times. A member expressed disappointment that The Grand Times never published information about the 2012 Shine in the Sun Tournament. The GTC has a reservation for the May 2014 cover of The Grand Times. Walt stressed the value of the Club becoming more visible through articles within the Grand Times. Walt met with Scott about keys missing from the lock box in the Sport Building on the storage room door, which have been understood to belong to the GTC only. It was learned that the Bocce Club has had the code to the GTC key box and used our key to access the kitchen. The other lock box in the building belongs to the Lawn Bowling and Bocce Clubs. Both of whom are also having problems with keys. Replacement keys will be made for storage and kitchen access. Key codes to GTC’s lock box will remain the same. In May the locks will be changed; keyed digital locks will be considered. Because no one volunteered to chair the November 2013 Shine in the Sun Tournament, and with the hope of drawing a bigger pool of volunteers and players, a straw vote was taken which supported moving the dates of the tournament to February 19-24, 2014. The previous SIS dates of November 6-10, 2013 will be used for an in-house, GTC-only tournament. Walt asked for volunteers to serve as Chair or Co-chair. Walt had asked last year’s Nomination Committee members (Skip Pavitt, Jim Palzer, and Donna Gropp) if they would again serve. They agreed. According to GTC by-laws, at least 3 people are needed for the committee, however, if others wish to serve, Walt asked they contact him. A Constant Contact email blast will be sent detailing procedures of elections for the 2014 Board to be held in October 2013. In 2012, not every voter followed the printed procedures; therefore, unfortunately about 15-20 ballots were deemed invalid. Jim Palzer reported the SCG Softball Club again stepped forward to serve as the umbrella group for all Clubs/ Teams within SCG for the 2013 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life charity events. GTC’s Ice Cream Social, along with the Softball Club and other clubs/individuals events raised $15,013. Walt reported 43 people attended the March Spring Training Ball game—at no cost to the GTC. A member asked if GTC was still facilitating tennis shoe donations. Walt reported in the past tennis shoes had been donated to ASU to be pulverized for playground surfaces. ASU has discontinued the program. Recently Joan and Jerry Doucett volunteered to take the shoes to St. Vincent de Paul. Joan asked that only wearable shoes be placed in the bin. Sue Schrader volunteered to take any tennis shoes, unacceptable to St. Vincent de Paul, to the new Nike store, as long as they don’t have rocks or metal. Walt used a projector connected to a laptop to demonstrate how to use the court online reservation system at http://www.holdmycourt.com/reserve2/gtc_tennis. A question and answer session regarding the online system lasted more than 20 minutes. The meeting was adjourned at 7:56 pm after a motion by Ron Wagner and a second by Linda Richman. |
